SANSHU Onigawara Kougeihin (Gargoyle Roof Tile)

Production of these roof tiles became active around the beginning of the 18th century, giving the craft a tradition of over 300 years. Those who make these roof tiles are called "Onishi" or "Oniita-shi," and their products range from traditional demon masks and roof tiles bearing family crests to smaller roof tiles for indoor use, as well as interior and exterior products.

    Technology/techniques

    1. Molding shall be done by applying clay or using a plaster mold.

    2. When applying patterns to the base material, rough carving, "shibi," or "migaki" should be used, and this should be done using a metal spatula, wooden spatula, or bamboo spatula.

    3. The firing process involves a smoking treatment.

     

    raw materials

    The clay used shall be Mikawa clay, mountain clay, Suihi clay, or a material of equivalent quality.
