AWA Shoai Shijira Ori (Indigo-dyed Cotton Textiles)

Tokushima Prefecture
Awa Shijira weaving is a type of cotton striped fabric called "Tatae-ori" that was widely woven in the Awa region at the end of the 18th century. Improvements were made to this fabric at the beginning of the Meiji era.
There are various theories about what prompted the improvement, but all of them say that it started when someone discovered that when they dried a wet piece of cloth in the sun, a natural and interesting crinkle formed on the surface of the cloth.
