GYODA Tabi (Socks)

Saitama Prefecture

GYODA Tabi (Socks), produced in Gyoda City, Saitama Prefecture, became known as a specialty product in the mid-Edo period and was shipped to Edo (present-day Tokyo) and the Tohoku region. With the introduction of sewing machines in the latter half of the Meiji era, production increased, and Gyoda became the leading tabi production area in Japan. Maintaining its long tradition to this day, it remains an indispensable item in Japanese clothing culture.

    Technology/techniques

    1. Sewing shall be carried out using the following techniques or methods:
    (1) "Nail stitching"is the process of sewing the top and bottom of the toe area together. In this case, the stitching should be done in a three-dimensional way, creating a bulge so that the toe fits comfortably.
    (2) "Mawashi" means sewing the instep and sole together, excluding the toes. In this case, the outer and inner fabrics of the "oya" and "yotsu" should be held in place with the fingertips while sewing to prevent them from shifting.

    2. The "finishing" involves turning the piece over from the back to the front using the "chasen," "tsukkomi-bo," and "kaeshi-bo," and then shaping it using the "bokki," spatula, wooden mallet, and finishing stand.
