NAGASAKI Bekko (Tortoiseshell Crafts) is a craft that has been produced mainly in Nagasaki City and Isahaya City in Nagasaki Prefecture since the Edo period. It is characterized by its meticulous and exquisite techniques, with the thickness and color carefully adjusted by hand. In addition to small items such as hair ornaments, large products such as treasure ships are also manufactured.

  1. The surface of the dough should be flattened using a gangi, kisagi, tokusa, etc.

  2. The doughs are heated using a trowel or metal plate and then pressed together using a vise or similar tool.

  3. In the manufacture of ornaments, wood such as cypress is used as a mold, and the wooden parts are glued together using a trowel.
